Telegram: The rise of the messaging app branded a 'home to criminals'

Telegram’s chief executive has a flair for drama. Pavel Durov, the 33-year-old founder of the secret messaging app, once made paper aeroplanes out of 5,000 rouble notes and threw them from the window of his office.
Mr Durov founded encrypted messaging app Telegram in 2013. It lets users send messages in a similar way to WhatsApp, or send alerts and videos to large groups and make voice calls. It also features nearly unbreakable encryption, making it impossible for governments and security services to infiltrate.
But Telegram has been accused of becoming one of the apps of choice for criminals driven out of hiding by the takedown of two major dark web marketplaces, as well as a safe haven for...

Amazon $1.2m gadget scam couple jailed

A couple who admitted stealing more than $1.2m (£900,000) worth of goods from Amazon have been sentenced to nearly six years in jail.
Erin and Leah Finan had previously pleaded guilty to charges of postal fraud and money laundering.
The couple exploited Amazon's customer service policy by claiming electronics they ordered were damaged and received replacements at no charge.
Prosecutors said that the sentence should serve as a warning to others.
"Consumer fraud not only unjustly enriches the perpetrator, it causes all of us to pay higher retail prices," said US Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Josh Minkler, in a statement.
"To those who seek to exploit the convenience of online shopping through fraud, remember this case. You will be caught. You will be prosecuted. And you will go to federal prison for a long time."
The couple used hundreds of fake identities to order gadgets from Amazon, then reported fake issues with the devices that led to replacements being sent out which they sold on for profit.
They were due to be sentenced last November but that was delayed after they were accused of defrauding another internet retailer.
In the Amazon scam, the couple stole more than 2,700 electronic items including Microsoft Xbox consoles, Samsung smartwatches, Apple MacBook and GoPro cameras
The goods were sold on to another person, Danijel Glumac, who was given a 24-month prison sentence.
Erin Finan was sentenced to 71 months in prison and his wife to 68 months.

WWDC 2018 Keynote Updates: iOS 12 Announced, FaceTime Gets Group Video Calls

The WWDC 2018 keynote has started, with Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken the stage to kick off the keynote. He revealed the App Store has over 20 million developers and gets 500,000 views a week. Moreover, the App Store developers will have made over $100 billion this week. The WWDC 2018 keynote will be "all about software," Cook has declared, and invited on stage Craig Federighi, the head of software development for Apple. The highlight of the WWDC 2018 keynote will, of course, be iOS 12, the next-generation software that powers the iPhones come September. Federighi says Apple has doubled down on performance with iOS 12 update, which will be available for iPhone 5s and above, iPad Air and above, iPad mini 2 and above, and iPod touch 6th generation. Keep hitting the refresh button to get WWDC 2018 live updates.

AR is one of the focal points of WWDC 2018 keynote, with ARKit getting new capabilities. Users will be able to design immersive experiences using AR tools provided by iOS 12. Federighi announced a new app called Measure that uses AR to help users measure objects and spaces with just a few taps. USDZ will enable users to place objects in real world spaces on their screens for another useful AR-centric feature. Shared Experiences is another AR-centric feature that allows users to share the same virtual space. 3D object recognition will allow users to expand their immersive creations.
The Photos app is getting more search functions, while Siri Suggestions is getting a major boost. Notifications will finally be grouped, so you can manage them - including swiping them away - in one go by notification type. An Activity Report feature has been announced, which will provide users with reports about the time spent on their phones per week so they can make decisions about their screen time, including deciding on downtime. Animojis are getting a few new members, such as Ghost, Koala, and T-Rex, etc. - but more importantly, there's a new Memoji, which will give users the option to select their own emoji avatar and use them as Animojis.
FaceTime is getting group video calls with up to 32 members, and iMessage is getting FaceTime integration. Group video calls will allow users to access Animojis, sticker packs, etc. The group video calling in FaceTime will work on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
watchOS 5 is bringing a new Walkie Talkie mode that lets users talk to their contacts right from their Apple Watch. There are also Interactive Notifications, web content in mail and messages, web content optimised for the small screen with watchOS 5. The Apple Podcasts app will also be coming to Apple Watch with this update. A Pride Edition watch face and band have also been announced, available starting today.
While the last year’s update for the software running the iPhones and iPads was riddled with bugs, iOS 12 at Apple WWDC 2018 is expected to be more about stability. Face ID is expected to get some improvements for faster unlocking, and more Animojis may be introduced. A Digital Health feature may be unveiled too give users more information about the time they spend on their phones. NFC may be opened up to provide users with more functions, such as opening NFC-capable doors, transmitting data to transit systems, personal authentication devices, and more.
Siri is also expected to become smarter with the announcements expected at WWDC 2018 keynote. With Siri stepping out of the iPhones, iPads and Macs and becoming the heart of HomePod smart speakers, which had a lacklustre debut, the virtual assistant needs better AI chops to compete with Google Assistant and Alexa. tvOS, macOS, watchOS are also expected to get some upgrades at the event. There are also rumours of unified apps coming to Apple developers, a system that will allow them to code a single set of apps for mobile devices and computers. A Dark Mode for macOS is also expected at the event.
Hardware announcements are expected to be few and far between, with iPhone SE 2 expected to hog the limelight among the hardware. Other than this, we can expect some refresh on the MacBook line, though the likelihood of that is quite slim.

Using the Find Iphone feature on Ios

How to turn on Find My iPhone for your iPhone or iPad

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on your Apple ID at the top.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Scroll down and tap Find My iPhone.
  5. Tap the switch to enable it.
Launch Settings, tap your Apple ID, tap iCloud, tap Find My iPhone, tap the switch

How to use Find My iPhone on the web

If you have a computer handy, you can easily track your missing iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac on the web via iCloud.com. It's as easy as following these steps:
  1. 1. Open iCloud.com in any web browser.
  2. 2. Log into your iCloud account.
  3. 3. Click on Find iPhone in the main menu.
  4. 4. Enter your Apple ID and password and sign in if prompted
  5. 6. Click on All Devices at the top.
Go to iCloud.com, click Find My iPhone, sign in, click All Devices
  6. Click the device name for the device you'd like to track.
  7. You can zoom in and out on the map to track it more closely, or you can choose from one of the modes listed in the upper right. Here is an explanation of what each does:
    • Play sound - Plays an audible tone, even if your device is on vibrate or silent. This is the option you'll want to use if your iPhone or iPad has gone missing around the house.
    • Lost mode - If you use this option, you'll be asked to enter a phone number that will display on the screen of your lost device. Someone can then use this number to call if they find the device. An audible tone will also be played to draw attention to the device.
    • Erase - If you don't think you're going to be able to retrieve the device, or you're worried about someone accessing your private data, you can remotely delete everything on it in order to protect your information.
Click the device name, click Play Sound, Lost mode, or Erase

How to use Find My iPhone on iPhone and iPad

Not only can you track a lost iPhone, iPad, or Mac on the web, you can use the Find My iPhone app to locate your phone. You'll find it on any iPhone. You can then track any device linked to your iCloud account by following these steps:
  1. 1. Launch the Find My iPhone app from any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
  2. 2. Log in with your iCloud ID.
  3. 3. Tap on the name of the device you'd like to track.
Launch Find My iPhone, sign in, tap the name of the device
  4. Tap on Actions at the bottom to see your options. Here you have the same 3 options you have in the web view of iCloud:
    • Play sound - Plays an audible tone, even if your device is on vibrate or silent. This is the option you'll want to use if your iPhone or iPad has gone missing around the house.
    • Lost mode - If you use this option, you'll be asked to enter a phone number that will display on the screen of your lost device. Someone can then use this number to call if they find the device. An audible tone will also be played to draw attention to the device.
    • Erase - If you don't think you're going to be able to retrieve the device, or you're worried about someone accessing your private data, you can remotely delete everything on it in order to protect your information.
Tap Actions, tap Play Sound, tap Lost mode, or tap Erase
That's it! Keep in mind that if you think your device was stolen, but you're able to track it, it's always best to get local law enforcement involved rather than trying to retrieve a stolen device on your own.
It's also worth mentioning that if you were using Apple Pay on the device that was lost or stolen, it's a good idea to remotely wipe your credit card information via iCloud on the web. If you aren't sure how, you can wait for the next article
